The 70: Create Unique Characters
with Seth K. Thomas
4-Week Course
Thursdays, 7:00 – 10:00PM
May 7th – May 28th, 2026
“The techniques of the theater are the techniques of communicating.”— Viola Spolin
Learn The 70: A technique for the creation of unique characters. The 70 is the only character technique designed with the improviser in mind. This four-week class is built directly from the truth of Viola Spolin’s insight: that performance techniques are communication techniques. The 70 is a character-creation technique – rooted in nonverbal behavior to help performers create characters ready to be played on stage. The technique was designed by Seth K. Thomas, specifically for improvisers to address a long-standing gap between traditional character training and the real-time demands of live performance. Drawing from both theater training and a background in speech communication, The 70 treats character as the primary medium of the stage player.
The class is open to performers at any level, from seasoned veterans to those who have never taken a character-focused class before. More than eighty-five percent of the class is spent on your feet, learning through exercises and improv. The technique teaches nonverbal communication codes as choices, helping performers recognize what they already do, expand their options, and confidently create unique, playable characters. The truth is this: every performer everywhere is already using this technique—whether they know it or not. This class invites you to become aware of it, refine it, and learn how to master what you’re already doing.
This class is four weekly sessions running from May 7th, 2026 to May 28th, 2026. The instructor is Seth K. Thomas.
CLASS DATES: THURSDAYS FROM 7-10PM, 5/7/26 – 5/28/26
